| The
Mitchell Streetscaping project is focused around 'The
Tree of Knowledge', an old bottle tree of local significance
growing in the heart of town. The footpaths have been
re-laid using red, orange and black coloured concrete,
referencing the three different soil types found in the
area. Red has been used to create a 'river of colour'
meandering through the entire streetscape. A series of
concentric black ripples initiate around tree of knowledge,
symbolising the growth rings of a tree and the ripples
caused by stone being dropped. The rippples finish at
a 500m radius from tree. The concrete finish is semi-exposed,
seeded local river rock. Several new build-outs have been
created with mature bottle trees relocated as features.
The areas directly around the bottle trees feature decking
(not concrete) to improve the uptake of water and reduce
the impact on root systems. Large rocks have been used
to create informal seating spaces with custom designed
seats indicating formal seating areas. Custom designed
planters have been installed with automatic irrigation
and drought tolerant plants. Over 200 feature mosaics
were constructed by community members and installed around
the seating nodes. See Mitchell
Community Mosaics, Mitchell
Lighting ,Mitchell
Seating and Anti
Loitering Seat for details. |
